| The 1997-1998 El Nino southern oscillation (ENSO) caused elevated sea temperatures that resulted in global coral bleaching. Coral reefs constitute an important biological resource in terms of their complex biodiversity and are the basis for tropical reef fisheries and marine ecotourism. They represent one of Mozambique's main coastal assets and its coastal communities and growing tourism industry rely mainly on reef-based resources. Mozambican artisanal fisheries are largely centred on reefs and are responsible for about 70% of the total catch, highlighting their importance. | The number of small commodity livestock slaughter plants in the Upper Northern Plains region continues to decline. Significant factors contributing to this decline include: 1) pressure to consolidate, thereby capturing economies of scale; 2) relatively stringent federal inspection specifications, along with; 3) HACCP (Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Points) requirements. At the same time, consumer demand (markets) for specialty, selected, and exotic meats appears to be growing. | The principal-agent literature has focussed on situations where both principal and agent are assumed to be capable of defining and defending their own interests. The principal-agent literature has thus ignored an important set of cases where the principal is incapable of acting on her own behalf, and so is assigned an agent by law or custom. Such cases account for around 40% of humanity and for a similarly substantial proportion of all principal-agent interactions. This paper applies principal-agent analysis to one such case, the family, where the child is taken as the principal and the parent is her agent. | A raça nativa Moxotó do Nordeste do Brasil e originária do estado de Pernambuco. Dentre as raças caprinas nativas do Nordeste, a Moxotó é a que apresenta a pelagem mais uniforme. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar as características morfológicas, desempenho produtivo e reprodutivo, mortalidade e conservação (ex situ) da raça Moxotó. As médias para taxa de cobrição (C), período de gestação (PG), fertilidade ao parto (F), prolificidade (P) e peso da mae ao parto (PM) foram 90,3%; 147,5 dias, 82,0%; 1,68(crias/parto) e 35,6Kg, respectivamente. | Prions are an unconventional form of infectious agents composed only of protein and involved in transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in humans and animals. The infectious particle is composed by PrPsc which is an isoform of a normal cellular glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchored protein, PrPc, of unknown function. The two proteins differ only in conformation, PrPc is composed of 40% <FONT FACE="Symbol">a</FONT> helix while PrPsc has 60% ß-sheet and 20% <FONT FACE="Symbol">a</FONT> helix structure. The infection mechanism is trigged by interaction of PrPsc with cellular prion protein causing conversion of the latter's conformation. | For the past twenty-five years, Dusansky and his associated co-authors have published a longseries of papers which are based on the same price-dependent utility function. The alleged price dependence, however, is fictitious in the sense that the level of exogenous money income can replace the commodity prices. The consequence is that the demand functions derived from Dusansky's utility function are identical and observationally equivalent to the demand functions obtained from a prototypical utility function. | O corte e queima são um dos tipos de perturbação predominante na floresta Atlântica montana no Sudeste do Brasil. A análise de uma cronosseqüência de regeneração (10, 18, 40 anos e floresta madura) corrobora a hipótese de que as características da floresta se transformam em diferentes velocidades em direção aos valores observados na floresta madura. Em ordem decrescente de velocidade, a floresta, após corte e queima, restaura a riqueza e a diversidade de espécies arbóreo-arbustivas, a composição de guildas, a composição florística (importância relativa das famílias) e, por último, os atributos da estrutura física, com exceção da densidade de indivíduos. | A distribuição espectral da radiação foi obtida nos meses de agosto de 1994, junho e agosto de 1995 numa área de Mata Atlântica situada no Parque Estadual Intervales, Base do Saibadela (24º14'S e 48º04'W). município de Sete Barras, SP. As leituras de varredura do espectro foram realizadas com espectroradiômetro LI-1800, em 22 pontos sob o dossel da floresta e três pontos numa área aberta, em condições de céu aberto (sol) e céu encoberto (nublado). Para a análise foram utilizadas as variáveis PPFD e a relação V/VE (655-665/725-735nm). A qualidade da luz fora do dossel não foi influenciada pela radiação difusa.
